Nineteen conferences had preceded COP20, the Climate Change Conference that took place in Lima in 2014, but all this had obviously not been enough for any significant change. We had come to Lima to make an artwork that would relate to this conference. Struck by the discrepancy between the hollow rhetorics of global politics inside its conference centers and the urgent local reality right outside, we decided to address this.
“Héroe del Barrio” is a series of performative interventions and films in which a local community is taking action to make change happen. Each community is fighting climate change in a very practical way by actually DOING something. We made five “Local Hero” films which were shown on a big screen in one of the conference’s restaurants. This way the conference members would still be exposed to the daily heroic actions of the people in the streets of Lima.
