With the now ubiquitous mobile phones the only body parts still active in communication are our thumbs. In Japan it is common to see calling people whispering in the palm of their hand, as if it were a very discrete thing to do.

For this container exhibition in Tokyo we designed a public installation which deals with the suppression of physical expression. To make a call, you need to “box” a number and since the speaker and microphone are installed a few steps apart, you need to keep moving to have a conversation, one that is loud and open for everyone to hear.
